Gibb River Road - Windjana Gorge/Tunnel Creek
Leaving Broome early, the first stop is at Willare Bridge Roadhouse, on the banks of the Fitzroy River. From here we head to the infamous Derby Prison Tree before joining the iconic Gibb River Road into the great Australian outback towards Windjana Gorge & Tunnel Creek. We first head to Windjana Gorge in the Napier Range, once an underwater reef 300 million years ago. During the wet season a river rages through the gorge, but during the dry it’s really more a series of ponds and billabongs. Set out on a bit of an explore, spotting a freshwater crocodile or two and abundant birdlife. After lunch and a short drive, we head to Tunnel Creek. The creek has worn a 750-metre tunnel through the Napier Range and finishes at a refreshing swimming hole. Join your guide for a walk through Tunnel Creek, learning about indigenous warrior Jandamarra who waged war on European settlement in the 1890’s. After afternoon tea we head to our first bush camp for a night under the stars around the fire in the Oscar Range. Note: Total driving time today is around five hours. Total walking distance is approximately four kilometres including walking through water in Tunnel Creek Accommodation Camping (1 night) Included Activities Windjana Gorge Tunnel Creek exploration walk Meals Included Breakfast Lunch Dinner
